WarDeck

An Android Auto companion dashboard for wardriving. Your WiGLE and WDGWars stats, your monthly coverage, and live alerts — rendered on the car screen while your usual scanner keeps doing the scanning.

v0.1.33 — Closed testing

WarDeck is in closed testing. The map hub, coverage layers, stats, WDGWars overlay, alerts, and the server-side tile proxy are all in place; Android Auto apps face a stricter Play review than ordinary ones, so the public release follows that process rather than a date we can promise. Get in touch if you wardrive and want a seat in the test track.

The Problem

Your stats are on a phone you should not be looking at

Wardriving is a driving hobby with a phone-shaped interface. The run that matters — what you have found this month, which streets are still blank, where the next unmapped pocket starts — lives behind a screen propped on the dash, and reading it properly means taking your eyes off the road.

WarDeck moves that readout to the surface the car already puts in front of you, in the low-distraction templates Android Auto was built around. It is a display, not a scanner: your existing rig keeps collecting exactly as it did before.

No scanning

Reads your stats — never captures networks

2 sources

WiGLE and WDGWars, merged into one view

On-device

Track and coverage stored locally, monthly-scoped

No account

No WarDeck server, no sign-up, no analytics

Features

Everything worth seeing at 45 mph

Built by wardrivers who got tired of squinting at a phone mount to find out whether the last twenty minutes were worth anything.

Self-Rendered Map Hub

A map centred on you, drawn directly onto the car surface. Nearby networks are clustered by type with new discoveries emphasised, so a glance tells you whether the road ahead is worth the detour.

Monthly Coverage Layers

Your drive track is laid down as a breadcrumb and your finds as a density heatmap, both scoped to the current month. The gaps in your own coverage become obvious — which is the whole point.

Career & Monthly Stats

Networks broken out by type — Wi-Fi, Bluetooth/BLE, cellular — plus your global rank and what you have added this month, refreshed on your scanner's upload cadence.

WDGWars Overlay

Your Watch Dogs Go Wars profile alongside your WiGLE numbers — handle, score, rank, cells held, and gang — pulled straight from the WDGWars API with your own key.

Live, Location-Driven Alerts

A heads-up when you cross into an unmapped area, an unusually rare-density pocket, or a likely fox. The alerts are derived from where you are right now, not from a schedule.

Adaptive HUD

The display trims itself to the essentials while the car is moving and fills back out when you are parked. Android Auto's own templates and your car's theme do the rest.

Pluggable Data Sources

WiGLE and WDGWars are two implementations of one seam. Adding another backend — including a live broadcast feed, should one ever ship — is a single new class behind the same merged dashboard state.

Server-Side Tile Proxy

Map tiles come from MapTiler over OpenStreetMap data through a small Cloudflare Worker, so the tile key stays server-side and never ships inside the app bundle.

On-Device Storage Only

Your drive track and the networks you have seen live in a local Room database, scoped to the month. There is no WarDeck server, no WarDeck account, and nothing to sign up for.

Phone and Automotive Builds

Two flavors share one codebase: mobile, which projects from your phone to Android Auto, and automotive, for head units running Android Automotive OS.

In Action

What WarDeck looks like

The projected car displays are capture-protected, so the car screens below are design previews of the shipping layouts with illustrative numbers. The setup screen is a real capture.

WDGWars Overlay — Handle, Gang & Rank (design preview)
Alerts — Unmapped Area Heads-Up (design preview)

How It Works

Three steps, then forget it is there

01

Add Your Keys

Install WarDeck on your phone and paste in a WiGLE API token, a WDGWars key, or both. They are stored on the device and sent only to the service they belong to.

02

Drive As You Always Have

Your existing scanner — the WiGLE app, an ESP32 wardriver, whatever you already run — keeps doing the collecting. WarDeck does not touch it and does not compete for the radio.

03

Glance, Don't Fumble

The car screen carries the map, the coverage layers, the stats, and any alerts. Your phone stays in your pocket and your hands stay on the wheel.

What it does, and what it refuses to do

The boundary is the design. A companion that scanned would be a different app with a different set of risks attached to it.

What it does

  • Renders a map centred on you, with nearby networks clustered by type
  • Emphasises new discoveries against everything already mapped
  • Draws your monthly drive breadcrumb over the map
  • Shades a density heatmap of where you have found the most this month
  • Shows career and monthly totals split by Wi-Fi, BLE, and cellular
  • Surfaces your global WiGLE rank and your WDGWars handle, score, rank, cells and gang
  • Raises live alerts for unmapped areas, rare density, and likely foxes
  • Trims the HUD while moving and restores it when parked
  • Stores the drive track and seen networks locally, scoped to the month
  • Runs as an Android Auto projection or natively on Android Automotive OS

What it deliberately does not do

  • It does not scan — no Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular capture of any kind
  • It does not ask for background location; foreground only, while you are using it
  • It does not run a server of its own, or hold an account for you
  • It does not ship analytics, advertising, or third-party tracking
  • It does not send your API keys anywhere but WiGLE and WDGWars
  • It does not upload your drive track — the coverage layers are local
  • It does not embed a map tile key in the app bundle
  • It does not claim affiliation with WiGLE or WDGWars; it is an independent companion
